Following Merthyr’s 2-1 defeat away at Walton Casuals last Saturday it saw Martyrs forward Ian Traylor make his 400th appearance for the club.
In his long-term spell at the club, the 30-year-old has won the Western League Southern League south along with the Southern League Cup. He also has won supporters player of the year 4 times alongside player of the year 4 times.
Speaking on his achievement, Traylor said “To make one appearance for this club would have been an achievement for myself but to make 400 I’m lost for words. I would like to thank Sheppy and Danny Carter for giving me the opportunity to show what I was capable of and playing for this great club. Coming from the welsh league system it meant a lot to play for Merthyr town for me, playing in a proper football ground and in front of proper fans. Who I have a lot of time for and I’ve seen how much this club means to them, but I had to work hard to get into the team at first and since I did I haven’t looked back. I’ve met some great people and played with some fantastic players and made friends for life. From a personal point of view, I think I’ve achieved a lot making 400 appearances and scoring a lot of goals on the way to winning leagues and cups plus improving myself a lot as a player. I owe a lot to the Managers I’ve had they’ve all been great with me trusting me to be a part of their teams they all pushed me to better myself a week in week out. I like to think I’ve shown that year in year out to.I don’t see the point in playing football if you don’t make demands from yourself to be better. Hopefully, there will be many more appearances to come and more trophies and goals”.
Also speaking on his exceptional Merthyr career manager Gavin Williams stated: “As the manager of Merthyr Town I would like to give my congratulations to Ian Traylor for achieving 400 games for the club. Many players don’t reach that figure over their career, so to reach this milestone at one club is truly remarkable.
The term “legend” is branded around very loosely these days, but when it comes to legends of Merthyr Town Football Club, you cannot look beyond Ian Traylor. Not only has he put on the Merthyr Town shirt over 400 times, but during that time has scored just under 200 goals, and continuously putting in stand-out performances that make him, the club legend that he is!
Ian is a true professional when it comes to the training and well-being of a footballer, and that can only be an advantage to everyone at the club, including himself. With 400 appearances under his belt, I know he can reach many more with the hard work and desire he puts into training.
I don’t think myself and Merthyr Town Football Club will truly appreciate what Ian does, and does consistently until that day comes when Ian isn’t wearing number 11 shirt any more. Ian has in a number of occasions, turned down offers to move to other clubs for much more money, but his commitment to Merthyr Town and understanding of the game has kept him where he feels best”.
Once again everyone at the Merthyr Town Football Club would like to congratulate Ian on an amazing achievement.
